The Plovdiv Archaeological Museum is one of the first cultural institutions in Bulgaria. It officially opened in 1882 year as a numismatic study. First it started with a numismatic collection of 1500 coins, ethnographical and historical documents, icons and paintings by eminent Bulgarian artists. Today, the Archaeological Museum keeps one of biggest colections of over 100 000 artifacts connected to Plovdiv's history.
