The waters of the Danube, which flow into the Black Sea, form the largest and best preserved of Europe's deltas. The Danube delta hosts over 300 species of birds as well as 45 freshwater fish species in its numerous lakes and marshes.

The Danube Delta

Before reaching the Black Sea the Danube river splits into three branches: Chilia, Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe, to create a unique landscape: the Danube Delta. The Danube Delta covers 4,152 sq. km of which 82% lie on the Romanian territory. Danube Delta is the second largest delta in Europe (after Volga Delta), one of the largest and most compact wetland areas in the world and the most important wetland area in South Eastern Europe, a place with the richest (over 300 species) ornithological fauna in the world, a crossroads for migratory birds, a place where endangered and rare species are to be found.
