The ancient city of Sirmium was spacious, and it was surrounded by city walls and moats. Archaeologists have found here remains of an imperial palace, hippodrome, public baths (thermae in Latin), storehouses, a trade and crafts centre, necropolis and many other buildings. They have also found many artefacts, stone statues, inscriptions and sarcophagi. The best preserved remains are those of Villa Urbana, parts of a storehouse, and a temple dedicated to Saint Demetrius. The modern town of Sremska Mitrovica stands on the ruins of Sirmium.
