The structure situated on the original site of antique Halicarnassos, was built by the Knights of Rhodes in the 15th century and dedicated to St. Peter. Stones and relief panels from the Mausoleum of King Mausolos were used in construction. The castle covers c. 30 000m2 and the five towers are named French, English, Italian, German and Snake. It houses the Bodrum Underwater Archaeological Museum today, an important specialized museum exhibiting finds from excavations begun in 1960s as well as the eastern Mediterranean amphora collection and the oldest ship-wreck in the world.
