The town, situated along the slopes of two adjacent valleys, was settled in early 14th century. The organic street pattern is in harmony with the natural characteristics of the site and its life-style. The Istanbul-Ankara highway constructed according to the 1951 master plan destroyed part of the town. Public reaction limited the application of this plan and the settlement characteristics were preserved until 1970s as a result of transportation difficulties, population decline and the continuity of traditional family structure and building crafts. Although a preservation plan is now in effect since 1991, the lack of professional staff and equipment and the loose character of the settlement pattern limit implementation, and unqualified repairs are altering the architectural features.
