This fortress is on the right bank of the Danube. The strategic location of the town has made it a crossroads between South Eastern and Central Europe for centuries. Smederevo was the last capital of the Serbian mediaeval state. From 1805 to 1807 it was the centre of the restored Serbian state. In the first half of the 15th century the relics of Saint Luke were brought to Smederevo and laid to rest at the Church of the Annunciation. This monumental historical complex has now been incorporated into the present-day town of Smederevo.

Today the stability of the Smederevo fortress is at risk because of the high underground waters.
