The central squares of Sibiu (the Saxon settlement of Hermannsdorf, in the 13th century and Hermannstadt later mid 14th century) are a unique assembly of historic urban design in Transylvania and Romania. Firstly protecting the parish church erected on a upper terrace of the river Cibin, the defensive walls of the settlement were five times enlarged thus creating three squares (Huet, Small Sq., Grand Sq.). The Small Sq. (15-16th century with later constructions) is the most pitoresque of them all as the rows or arcades cover almost all the perimeter and in the same time the skyline of the square is marked by the vertical accents of the Towers of the Town Hall, the Evangelic Church and the Catholic Church.
