The multimedia product Treasure Quest, consisting of an interactive CD and website www.heriquest.com, was produced within the framework of the two-year project Encouraging the Use of the New Methodology in the teaching, Preservation and Promotion of Cultural and Environmental Heritage, funded by British Council Bulgaria through the British Council Cultural and Environmental Heritage Fund for South East Europe.

The second phase of the project, Children and the Cultural Heritage of South-Eastern Europe is a practical follow-up to the Varna Declaration adopted by the Regional Forum on the Cultural Corridors of South East Europe (Varna, 20–21 May 2005) under the high patronage of the Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov, UNESCO Secretary General Koichiro Matsuura and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Mr. Terry Davis.

The project’s target audience is mostly children aged 6–14 who live in South East Europe. Its objective is to raise their awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural heritage in general, with a particular emphasis on the Region’s unique cultural heritage, and thereby, foster a sense of regional identity and a sense of shared responsibility and respect for the values of other nations, ethnic communities and religions. The multimedia content, available in Bulgarian and in English, is attractive and user-friendly and invites young learners to be active participants in an informative game-play.

The project is also addressed to educationalists and has drawn on international experience in the teaching of heritage, including sources such as UNESCO, the Council of Europe, the European Commission the United Kingdom and others.
The results of the Council of Europe Heritage Education Programme were taken into account, as well as the results of the Council of Europe and European Commission joint initiatives - the Regional Programme for Cultural and Natural Heritage in South-East Europe and the European Heritage Days.
