Rhodopi Cultural Area

In most of the cases, a historical territory is a strong integration field for interaction between culture and tourism, having also as elements of connection the cultural roads on different levels and from different type: cultural corridors and cultural routes. In the frames of the project Heritage: ESPRIT the territory of Rhodopi Cultural Area (part of Central and East Rhodopi Mountains and including 20 Phodopean municipalities) is chosen for the development of a pilot territorial basis for cultural tourism. The cultural resource of the territory is studied together with the participation of fifth year students, specializing in Preservation of architectural heritage at the History and Theory of Architecture Department (UACEG). The exceptional richness of specific values is expressed. At this grounding a series of thematic cultural routes is defined – a basis for regional integrated tourist products with cross-border effect, connected with the network of the cultural corridors of South East Europe and with the European and World cultural roads. The students continue their researches in the territory as a basis for a series of course and diploma projects at urban and architectural levels. Students continue their researches in the territory as a basis for course and diploma project at urban and architectural levels. The results from the project are an excellent basis for future tourist products, suitable for the assimilation of European structure funds in the frames of the Operational programme Regional Development or for cross-boarder projects. For that purpose the Association for Cultural Tourism in partnership with the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria and the Municipality of Krumovgrad, carry out a course for raising the capacity of local societies in the field of cultural heritage and cultural tourism (Kurdzali, 16-17 July 2007).
